Should you choose your own magical name, or should it be suggested to you by someone else? from 'Dark Mirror: The Inner Work of Witchcraft' by Yvonne Aburrow

I say both options are valid, depending on your personal preference. First, let's talk about why you would choose a magical name in the first place. Often magical names are chosen when you are initiated into the craft. These names are only used in ritual spaces.

Sometimes, people choose a magical name to use in pagan and witchcraft communities to protect their real identities for various reasons. In general, a new magical name might help you develop your identity as a witch and get into a magical headspace.

I have a couple of magical names! In outer court, I was known as Iris. I chose that name myself because, at the time, I was very connected to the Goddess Iris. She is a messenger like Hermes, can be in the upper and lower worlds, and is represented by rainbows.

When I was initiated, I decided to choose another name. Sometimes, people request that who ever is initiating them choose a new name for them. I had a theme in mind, and I scoured name lists trying to find one that represented the energy I hoped to develop at this stage.

One night, I asked my higher power to send me the name in a dream. That night, in my dream, I saw an envelope delivered to me with the name! I do not publicly share this name or my second-degree name. When I was elevated, I requested that the Elders of my coven choose a name for me. I assisted them when they were stuck and they also used divination to solidify the choice.

Kelody Fey can also be considered a magical name. It’s the name I hope to be known by in wider pagan and witchcraft communities since I do not feel comfortable using my real name, especially online and on social media. In mundane life I work with a range of people and typically do not disclose my spiritual practices. Kelody is a play on melody and represents my connection to music. Fey can be defined as: “marked by an otherworldly air or attitude” “supernatural” “enchanted” “whimsical”. This name combines my identities as a musician and a witch.

When considering a magical name, reflect upon what you are drawn to in your witchcraft:

  • plants

  • crystals

  • ancestors

  • elements

  • constellations

  • animals

  • music

Start there and build a list of favorites. Think about the energy or values you hope to grow and how a name could represent those. I have been told to stay away from using major deity names of the various pantheons such as Zeus or Hecate because it could seem disrespectful to them. Be creative and make a unique name for yourself!
