Making of My Music: Tempest

"Tempest" was one of the first songs that I wrote fairly quickly. It was during the time right before I delved into my first romantic relationship. We bonded over music and challenged each other to write a song. I was processing some of the feelings I had and my tendency to keep them to myself. Eventually, I did share some of the songs I wrote with him and he shared some of his with me. Music was something we bonded over, yet the relationship wasn't meant to last.

Later the song, took on a different a meaning. I try to write songs that could be general enough for different perspectives. For a while, the song was untitled until I remembered a lyric from "How can I keep from singing?"

What though the tempest round me roars...

"Tempest" aligned with the imagery of the storm that develops throughout the song, representing tension. What message do you feel needs to be expressed, when you hear this song?

Tempest: When the Wind Blows

The moon sits high

Full, on an October night

Mist billows on sea air

The winds tempting me with a dare

Tides rip, waves race

Shadows fall at a dripping pace

One by one, the stars go out

From my heart there comes a shout

I can feel it in the day

I can feel it in the night

Oh when the wind blows

There’s something I wish I could say

Something that puts up a fight

Only when the wind blows

A lonely boat anchored down

Far from any lights of town

On the shore restless birds cry

A hazy dream behind my eyes

One day I’ll whisper to the wind

The words will whip on by

Like a storm blowing through

One day when you listen to the wind

You’ll hear my yearning cry

A message just for you

I can feel it in the day

I can feel it in the night

Only when the wind blows

Oh how it makes me sway

Oh how will I find the light?

Oh when the wind blows
