The Virtue of Power

Power is a complex concept. In the context of Wicca, power is the building of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energy. It is fueled by the personal power we each have within each other and the energy that flows around us. It is all connected and filtered in different ways. It is important to not use up all our personal power; we must learn to access and direct the power around us.

In witchcraft, we build power through other sources to direct towards spells and rituals to boost the intention. Ways to build power and energy include:

  • Chanting and Singing

  • Drumming

  • Dancing

  • Drawing on the energy of the elements, especially Earth.

  • Drawing on the energy of crystals, herbs, images, sigils

  • Requesting the assistance of deity and spirit

However, we know that power imbalances can occur. I believe that the "virtue" of power is understanding how to harness and use power wisely, ethically, and effectively. In a way, this virtue can harken back to Wiccan laws about harming none and that what you do will comeback three fold. The power you send out will come back with three times that power. So it is crucial to consider the impact your power has beyond you.

One way we can check our own personal power is to evaluate the solar plexus chakra. The solar plexus is located right around the navel and it represents or personal power, our will, our identities. Our gut intuition lives in this area as well.

When the solar plexus chakra is in balance, we feel confident with a healthy ego. We have a strong sense of purpose and our goals. We are able to maintain boundaries. We trust our intuitions.

At times, the energy of the solar plexus chakra can become overdeveloped. Some signs of this include: perfectionism, becoming a workaholic, developing addiction, anxiety, and becoming emotionally reactive.

Sometimes, the energy can become underdeveloped, leading to: a lack of purposes/direction, being passive or submissive, fear of challenge, low energy, and physical stomach issues.

A simple way to balance the solar plexus and restore your power, whether low or high, is to call your power back to yourself. Even when it is hyperactive or overdeveloped, your power is going into work or anxiety. When hypoactive or underdeveloped, you might be letting your power leak and letting others take charge.

So to call back your power, to your solar plexus, pick a time during the day to meditate for a couple minutes. Reflect on when and where, and with whom, who have given up some of your power (whether intentionally or not) and ask that power to return to you. Maybe think of a yellow or golden thread or pieces returning to your solar plexus chakra. Perhaps recite a brief chant such as:

The day is done

I've given by best

I call my energy

Back to myself to rest

My heart is full

My mind is clear

My soul is whole

My power returns here
