I am way behind on getting this post together, but it is technically still Libra season, which runs from Sept 21/23 through Oct 21/22/23 depending on the resource. As I mentioned in my Autumn Equinox post, Libra heralds the Autumn season encouraging us to reflect on balance.
The symbol of scales represents Libra, which some say harkens back to when Egyptians weighed the harvest or the Babylonian belief that after death we weigh our vices and virtues. Libra’s mantra is “I balance.”
Libra is the Cardinal Air sign and the opposite of Aries. Chani Nicholas states, “Libra initiates relationships seeking balance, harmony, and justice,” The first half the zodiac wheel is focused on the self or 'me'. Libra begins the cycle of growth beyond the self towards union with others or 'we'. Libra is therefore associated with the 7th house, which focuses on partnerships. This house along with Libra’s ruling planet Venus was reviewed more fully in my Pisces post.
Some key characteristics of Libra energy include:
Outgoing, sociable
Diplomatic, fair, objective
Graceful, charming
Artistic, aesthetic
Can become resentful
Can be aggressive when needed
Self sacrificing for sake of peace
Idealistic
Gullible
Flirtatious/Romantic
Hardworking, perfectionist
Refined
Indecisive
Frivolous
In my personal chart, Libra plays a significant role as the last of the top three -sun, rising, moon- signs. I am a Libra moon, and after some research I was born basically on a full moon. My Aries sun and Libra moon are very much opposites.
I wrote about the moon sign briefly in my Cancer post, as Cancer is governed by the moon. The sun sign is our purpose and true self. The actual moon reflects the sun’s light, so in terms of astrology the moon represents how we live on a daily basis physically and spiritually to fulfill that purpose.
The moon is associated with the ideas of instincts, intuition, nurturing, emotional awareness, receptivity, habits/patterns of the past that ensure our daily survival. The moon also represents mass consciousness and how it is ruled by emotion, aka the behaviors and patterns one might witness on a full moon. I just had this conversation with someone who works in a nursing home who always notices a fluctuation in behaviors around the new and full moon.
For me, my Libra moon falls in my 2nd house. I reviewed the 2nd house in my Taurus post. So with a Libra moon, I:
Might feel more at home in partnerships
Need calm and peace for well being- can self sooth by putting things back into harmony- with colors, sounds, textures, words, partnerships
Am tactful and have natural diplomacy aka the “peacemaker” or “peacekeeper”
Easily respond to and identify with others- their problems and point of view
Act with kindness to bring out the best in others, make others feel witnessed
Need to create beauty
Am very aware of when things are out of balance
Feel injustice deeply
Feel the need to be liked
Am sensitive to conflict
Need security
Worry about money
Enjoy material comforts
Am gentle but strong
Am ambitious but dependent
Have emotional intelligence
In Chani Nicholas’ book, I really identified with this from the second about Libra in the 2nd house “Your work may have something to do with fertility, infertility, conception, women, gender nonconforming folks, femmes, caregiving, nourishing others, child care, the Goddess, or writing/communicating.”This passage was very validating in many ways, with more to come on these specific areas, all of which are important in my life’s work.
Where is Libra in your chart? How do you find balance in life? In what ways does your moon sign reflect your sun sign in your life?
