Virtuous Virgo

From August 23rd through September 22nd, we are in Virgo season. Virgo is the mutable Earth sign that is versatile and grounded in practicality. Virgo’s symbol is the Virgin, sometimes considered the maiden or priestess. She is holding a sheaf of wheat and is often depicted with wings.
In ancient times, virgins were known as “those who belonged to themselves.” (Nicholas). They often served in temples and were known for their devotion and dedication to their deities, but also practical service.
Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury, which I discussed in my Taurus post. I have yet to review the 6th House, over which Virgo reigns. The 6th house deals with overall daily routines pertaining to work, health, and hobbies. Mars and my North Node are found in my 6th house, and will be reviewed more fully when we get to Aquarius season.
Below is a list of Virgo characteristics:
Efficient
Perfectionist
Analytical, discerning
Humble, modest
Organized, tidy
Useful, Productive
Practical
Critical
Intellectual
Worrier
Thoughtful, introspective
Sensitive
Meticulous
Shy, quiet
Sweet, Gentle
Feel inadequate
In service to others
Virgo has a very important role in my astrological chart because it is my ascendant, or rising sign. The ascendant sign is one of the top three major influences on someone, with the other two being the sun and moon signs.
The ascendant is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the time of birth. This point changes every couple hours, so it is important to know the exact time you were born along with the place to calculate it. It can highlight the conditions that were around you at the time and set foundational patterns for your personality and life. The ascendant sign is always found in the first house, which I reviewed in my Aries post.
The ascendant is much like a window, for it shapes how one looks at the world and how one is perceived by others. It represents your motivations and how you adapt to the world. So the ascendant can give clues as to why you might not completely align with your Sun sign.
That was very much the case for me. My inner essence is a fiery Aries, but I would say many would describe me with Virgo traits. For the longest time, I questioned if I was an Aries. But then I discovered my full chart. I felt very seen and validated via these quotes regarding a Virgo ascendant from my resources:
Chani Nicholas:
“Known for the ability to make the info you have access to useful, practical, applicable”
“Happiest when working on something meaningful”
“Intrigued with intelligent systems that are healing, efficient, naturally occurring”
Elsie Wild:
“You may not notice a Virgo rising at first glance, but they notice you.”
A Virgo rising can seem quite shy and unassuming, but they are always observing and “internally busy” (Nicholas). For me, this is often the case because I am trying to figure out ways in which I can help organize and support the people around me. This is also very much influenced by my Libra moon, which will be discussed in my next zodiac post.
